Re-dreaming time!

Oh dear, it is the dreaded time of the year when everyone is talking about New Year’s resolutions. You know those goals that nobody ever keeps and is forgotten about come end of January? Although, I am not a fan of an actual resolution, I do think that this time of year is the perfect time to take stock of what the current year brought you. What were some of your ups/downs? What about the good/bad? Maybe this year isn’t the year you start a new resolution, but maybe a whole lifestyle change? The goal is to always be growing learning, becoming a better version of you, and by this time next year be in a different spot. In order to do that, I think it is important to take a look at 3 things. 1). Reflect 2). Regroup 3. Re-dream

1). Reflect. What did 2014 bring to you? What events happened? What did you do that you enjoyed and you considered a success? What did you do that you didn’t enjoy and that you would consider less successful? Take stock of everything that you did or even didn’t do as well as what you liked or disliked. Life is life and sometimes we have to be doing things that we don’t WANT to do, but if there is a way to change those things and rid them of your life, that is even better!

2). Regroup. Taking that information you obtained in your reflection and figure out what changes you want to make in the New Year. What do you want to keep the same? Obviously repeating bad habits is not a productive way to become a better you. Stay consistent on the things that are working in your life and then find the resolve, time or know-how to fit in the things that you want to do differently. What are your natural talents? Most of us are very hard on ourselves and maybe don’t even know what our natural strengths are. So maybe ask a friend or family member to help you out with this. I guarantee that you have some! Knowing those things about yourself allow you to focus on what comes naturally to you and when you do that, you aren’t fighting against yourself. Plus you normally ENJOY the things that you are good at.

3).Re-dream. What is your goal? WHY is that your goal? It is very important to spend some time on this section. Your goal for 2015 has to be more than just an income amount, job change or the purchase of something. Dig deeper than that. What would that job change mean to you and your family? What would that purchase mean to you and your family? Why are you pushing to reach these goals? If you can connect the real reason for wanting your dream, the emotional connection will keep you pushing through the hard times. I promise you, there will be hard times.  Dream big! Everyone deserves their dreams to come true! So I urge you all to dream big, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t celebrate and enjoy the small victories along the way. If your goal is to run a marathon…. Celebrate the new personal long runs during your training period. Celebrate that you are running with more efficiency. Celebrate the fun that you are having. If you focus solely on the BIG goal, you miss out on the journey.

As you reflect over the year, whether in your personal life, career, family, or health are you not really in the place you want to be?  Maybe it is time for some personal development. Read books, get to some events (church, leadership retreats, company conferences), and hang around with people who are in the places you want to be. It is said that you are the average of the 5 people you hang around with most. So who are you hanging out with? Do they inspire you to be the best version of yourself?

As 2014 comes to a close, curl up on the couch with your cup of coffee (or glass of wine) to reflect, regroup, and redream.
